What are LEDs?

Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs use semiconductors to convert electricity into light. Where once they were an emerging technology, LED lights are now the preferred lighting choice for homes and businesses in Australia for several reasons.  

What are the Benefits of LED Lights?

• A long lifespan: Switching to LED lights uses up to 75% less energy and the bulbs emit 90% less CO₂ than their predecessors, making them a much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly option.

• Durability: LEDs last 5 to 10 times longer than incandescent and halogen bulbs. They do not contain a filament or fragile glass components like older bulbs, making them more durable, meaning fewer replacement bulbs are needed.

• Cost-saving: It’s estimated that replacing 10 incandescent and halogen lightbulbs with LEDS could save a household up to $650 on their electricity bill over 10 years. LEDs generate less heat than incandescent and halogen bulbs, which is excellent news for your electricity bill during summer when the air conditioner is running.

• Safety: LED bulbs are generally safer than older lightbulbs as they use a lower voltage. As they consume less power, LED lighting can be used safely on low-voltage systems such as landscape lighting and home security lights.  They also don’t contain toxic materials such as mercury or lead. For consumers, this means you don’t need to dispose of the bulb in a special way at the end of its lifespan.

• Better for the environment: LEDs are an environmentally friendly choice to make for your home lighting. In 2018, the Australian Government deemed incandescent and halogen light bulbs inefficient. It introduced a phase-out strategy to remove the remaining old lightbulbs from the Australian market where an equivalent LED bulb is available.

• Colour choice: LEDs are available in different light colours: warm white, natural white and cool white. This allows you to customise the light choice to the room in your home, such as cool lightbulbs for the laundry or bathroom and warm or natural white for the loungeroom or bedrooms.
